During their school holidays, 24 students from Alfriston College, Auckland Seventh Day Adventist High, Papakura High School, and Southern Cross Campus Inc. took a deep dive into the world of maintenance and trades. These students participated in the Cadetship Programme, gaining invaluable hands-on experience while working in homes under the mentorship of Downer Spotless and their maintenance contractors.
Southern Cross Campus already boasts a Trades and Construction Academy, and the Cadetship Programme adds another layer to the practical knowledge students acquire. Sheryl MacDonald, the schools’ Gateway Coordinator, emphasizes the importance of real-world experience, noting that this programme significantly contributes to students' learning and development.
A proud parent of one of the graduating students praised the programme for boosting their child’s confidence and independence, and for providing a platform to explore potential career aspirations.
The final intake for 2024 is scheduled for October, offering more students the opportunity to benefit from this enriching experience.
