Empowering Future Builders: A Hands-On Urban Development Workshop

28 Apr 2025

The construction and engineering industries are constantly evolving, and equipping the next generation with the right skills and insights is crucial. That’s why the recent Urban Development Workshop with Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) pre-trade students was such an exciting and valuable experience.

Held in the heart of Māngere, this one-day workshop introduced students to the world of urban development, providing them with an in-depth look at the Wider Māngere Development plans and the key milestones achieved so far. Many of these students call Māngere home, making this event even more impactful, as they had the opportunity to understand the transformations happening right in their own community.

From site visits showcasing real construction projects to career panels featuring industry professionals, the day was packed with practical learning experiences. The students engaged in conversations with experts from the Māngere Development Team and build/civil partners, gaining valuable advice on career pathways, job opportunities, and the realities of working in the field.

One of the most exciting parts of the day was seeing students experience virtual reality (VR) training modules designed for construction. The VR headset allowed them to engage with interactive training covering health and site safety, traffic management, and more. This innovative approach provided a realistic, hands-on way to develop essential industry skills before stepping onto an actual worksite.

Beyond the learning experience, the workshop also opened doors to potential work experience placements with build partners, helping students take their first steps toward a career in construction and engineering. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and eagerness to learn were truly inspiring, showing that the future of the industry is in good hands.

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our industry partners, mentors, and the Māngere Development Team. Your dedication to supporting the next generation is truly making a difference.

As we continue to create opportunities for young people in the trades, we look forward to more engaging workshops, hands-on training, and career-building experiences.
