Making our Aorere streets safer

As part of the Mangere Development work in Aorere, we’ll be improving our streets, helping make our neighbourhood safer for all of us.

By changing the way some of our streets are laid out, and adding safety features, we will slow down traffic and make our streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists and people in cars.  And that’s great for everyone who lives here.

Work has begun on building these new safety features along Henwood Road, Mayflower Close and Winthrop Way. Expect to see things like no stopping zones, side islands, raised tables and more road signs appearing.

Here’s the key areas to look out for:

  • Paneke Street – we’re building a new road to link Mayflower Close and Winthrop Way. This road will have indented parking and rain gardens. Road markings will be added to advise no stopping at all times.
  • Mayflower Close - two new side islands will slow cars down.
  • Intersection of Mayflower Close and Paneke Street – a raised table Intersection will lower speeds and make the roads more pedestrian friendly.
  • Mayflower Close and Winthrop Way – berm work to increase visibility for drivers and pedestrians.
  • Henwood Road – indented rain garden will slow traffic down.

There may be some disruption, we apologise.

During the work, you may experience some disruption, including not being able to access normal on-road parking.  We understand the impact this may have on you so we’ll do all we can to minimise this disruption.

Traffic signs will be provided to ensure safe travel through the area and noise and vibration will be kept to a minimum.

Answers to some questions you may have.

What time will works take place?
We will work between 7:30am – 5pm on Monday to Friday. If critical weekend work is required, it will be on Saturdays between 7:30am and 4pm.

Will I be able to drive to my house?
If you live in the area, it may take a few minutes longer than usual to reach your home by car. If your access is impacted by our work, we will discuss what this means with you and agree a plan that meets your needs.

Will I still be able to walk around the area?
All houses and apartments will be able to be accessed while the work is going on. Pedestrians will still be able to walk through and around the area.

Who is doing the work?
Piritahi, a Kāinga Ora Alliance partner, has been working in our Aorere neighbourhood since 2020 to deliver infrastructure upgrades so more homes can be built.
