Six Vector boxes across Aorere and Te Ararata have been given a colourful makeover, transforming everyday infrastructure into vibrant artworks that celebrate the people, stories, and history of the local community.

Created by artist Elisabeth Kumaran in partnership with mana whenua, local schools, community groups, and the Māngere Development placemaking team, each artwork has been designed to reflect what makes these neighbourhoods special.

Some of the designs tell stories about the area's volcanic landscape and historic portage routes, while others highlight local wildlife, the Te Ararata Stream, and the values that matter most to local tamariki. One artwork, inspired by Kingsford Primary School students, features themes of kindness, belonging, respect, and home.

More than just brightening up the street, the project is about helping people feel connected to the places where they live. By bringing local stories into public spaces, these artworks create a stronger sense of identity, pride, and belonging throughout the community.

As Kathleen Waldock, Manager Placemaking, says:

"Collaborating with mana whenua and the local community to express identity in a visible, public way has been incredibly rewarding."

These newly painted Vector boxes are a great example of how even the most ordinary parts of a neighbourhood can become meaningful when they reflect the stories and cultures of the people who call it home.
