The Māngere development programme has officially kicked off after the Minister of Housing and Urban Development Phil Twyford opened the Māngere Development Information Centre last month.
The occasion marks a significant stepping stone for the Auckland Housing Programme – a joint initiative between Housing New Zealand and Hobsonville Land Company (HLC) to deliver small, medium and large-scale housing developments Auckland wide.
The Māngere development will see 2,700 old state houses replaced with 10,000 quality new homes delivered to the Mangere community over the next 10-15 years. Of those, around 5,000 will be new state houses, 2,500 will be new KiwiBuild and affordable homes, and 2,500 will be market homes. There’s something for everyone in the Mangere development, including the local community.
“I am determined that the local community benefits from this redevelopment and are not priced out of the new homes,” says Twyford. “The KiwiBuild homes will give local families a realistic shot at homeownership, which helps families put down roots and provide stability for their children. HLC are working to keep the prices of KiwiBuild homes as low as possible. Long-term rent and shared equity options are also under development.”
HLC’s Precinct Director for the Development, Mark Fraser, said the initial works are already underway on the corner of Bader Ave and MacKenzie Road. Stage One of the development will see 176 old state homes make way for 662 new ones, to be completed by 2023.
Fraser says that in addition to new warm, dry, attractive homes, the development will prioritise high quality urban design with a strong focus on community amenity and improved infrastructure. This ‘amenity-first’ approach is common to all HLC projects, including the award-winning Hobsonville Point.
The Māngere Development Centre, in conjunction with the Mangere Development website, will be the ‘go-to’ zones for news, updates, progress reports and information regarding the development. The centre will also be used as a base for the HLC community team to liaise directly with the Māngere community.
