Māngere was hit hard by the Auckland Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle that followed. It caused extensive loss across our community and many locals still have unanswered questions or need further support. Working with I AM Māngere, we hosted a number of ‘Street Chats’ that allowed the community to share their questions, concerns and experiences with us. While we don’t have all the answers, we’re keen to connect you with the right places and people who can support you.
Firstly, a big thank you to the I AM Māngere team for their massive mahi in organising these korero sessions. And thank you to everyone who came and shared their heartfelt stories with us. We heard the voice of a community still dealing with loss and in need of further support. As a result, we joined up with the Tāmaki Makaurau Recovery Office to provide useful information and contacts that can help address many of your questions and concerns.

Funding Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s storm recovery.
https://akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/recoveryfunding
Auckland Council and the Government have negotiated a funding package to help Auckland recover from the storms. The Government will provide just under $1.1 billion, with Auckland Council investing around $900 million. The funding is proposed to go to three main areas:
- Restoring the transport network;
- Resilience projects like Making Space for Water; and
- Buying out homes with the highest risk of future flooding and landscape instability.
You can have your say on whether to accept the government’s funding proposal, from 11-24 September, by
- filling out the online feedback form on the AK Have Your Say website;
- emailing stormrecoveryconsultation@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz; or
- visiting your local council service centre or library.
